I specialise in line edits and critiques for creative writing and proof-reading of academic essays.

I can offer a proofread of your document. A proof is a final lookover to correct misspellings, inconsistencies, grammatical and punctuation errors, issues with formatting, and other surface issues.

Editing involves a much more in-depth engagement with your writing. I offer light edits when you are near the final document. I can improve tone and style, correct grammar and help with cutting. I also offer heavy edits with many suggestions, critique and reader-feedback if you are wanting to continue your own editing process. Please specify what level of edit you would like when you get in touch.

I’ve worked on multiple novels and academic treatises offering structural/developmental editing. This is much more big-picture than a line edit or a proof. This is what you need if you are struggling with content, themes, with character development or with structuring your argument.
Please get in contact for a quote. For a rough guide, I work to the Chartered Institute of Proofreaders and Editors’ minimum rates. I offer a discount for students, community groups, social justice or environmental projects, or if you are under financial hardship.
To provide a quote, I shall need to know a word count, whether you want an edit or a proof (read below for services offered), subject matter, and deadlines. If you can provide a sample of the text, that would be much appreciated.

About Me
I'm Trudy ML, a freelance creative based in Edinburgh. I predominantly work as an editor and proofreader. I have a First Class Honours MA in English Literature (with a minor in English Language and Linguistics) from the University of Glasgow and a diploma in Proofreading and Editing. I specialise in editing creative writing and academic manuscripts for publication. My background is in both the humanities and social sciences but I proof and edit across disciplines. I love theatre and have various backstage roles in amateur and semi-professional companies which has taught me a lot about dramaturgy. When not improving your written work or creating theatre, I can generally be found walking through the parks and green spaces of Scotland or curled up at home with a book.
